Interested in joining your local group ride? Here’s my essentials check list!
The popularity of Electric scooters, unicycles, skateboards, and bicycles is on the rise and is the surging alternative method for personal transportation.
Aside from commuting to work, or going to the grocery store, using your PEV to join group rides and meeting like-minded EV enthusiasts, is a considerable facet of being in the PEV community!
- PEV Essentials List
Joining your first local group ride is exciting and can be a bit nerve wrecking for some! Here’s a list of NYC group ride items that keep me safe, prepared, and at ease:
1. Safety Gear
Let’s face it, riding your PEV at speeds of 20mph -30mph is extremely fun, but this type of fun welcomes a higher risk of injury. Be prepared for the worse, and wear a full-face helmet and proper guards (knee, elbow, gloves).
While some of us are confident in our riding abilities, it’s the risk of some one else making a slip while riding, that could land us in the emergency room. A trip to the ER will be painful and expensive! Bonus points for CE back protection.
2. Electric Horn & Lights
You have to be heard; an electric horn is an absolute must. Riding our PEV’s, there’s no easy way to be heard or signaled. At high speeds, the best way to communicate is through sound. An electric horn with a minimum 100DB rating is perfect for sharing with fellow riders.
You also have to be seen! In the nighttime, having external handlebar headlights will allow you to see and taillights will allow you to be seen! Using any bicycle head and tail lights will provide adequate visibility to both PEV riders and motorists.
3. Fast Charger and Surge Protector
Group rides can cover distances between 20 – 30 miles, and up to 70 miles in a day! Getting to the meet-up spot will drain a bit of your battery; it’s highly recommended that you invest in a fast charger and surge protector to recharge your PEV.
NYC group rides usually have rest/charge spots where you can hang out and recharge your PEV. Having a charged battery is essential to keep up with the group and also prevent you from being stranded.
The surge protector will also protect your charger/PEV and allow you to charge any electrical accessories (phone, lights, charger, etc.). Check with your local group to see how much distance you cover and plan your route, charge, and range ahead of time!
4. Back Pack
Having a comfy backpack is essential for carrying your riding gear. Some misc items I carry in my backpack include water, tire pump, hex keys, tire sealant, extra sweater, wallet, etc. Any bag will suffice!
Make sure to bring the essentials; I’ve caught myself overpacking (similar to over-packing for vacation), which could lead to unnecessary discomfort on my shoulders.
5. Good Vibes!
Make sure to have fun! You’ll meet plenty of new people from all different backgrounds, who all share one common interest, having fun and riding their PEVs.
The community loves chatting about their PEV’s, maintenance, accessories, local routes, etc. Find your local group ride today and have a blast!
